On 8 July 2024, the Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP) officially bid farewell to Dr. Vamsi Vasireddy, at the head offices in Nakasero, Kampala. Dr Vasireddy has been the Country Director-Uganda, Walter Reed Army Institute of Research-Africa, United States Department of Defense, since December 2021.
In her remarks, Dr. Hannah Kibuuka, MUWRP’s Executive Director, recounted how Dr. Vasireddy’s exemplary leadership and dedication to service have significantly impacted MUWRP. “You have made MUWRP visible and felt in various corners in Uganda and beyond. You have made things work, and wherever we have encountered challenges, you have advocated for us, and helped us to overcome the hurdles.” she appreciated. In the same spirit, Dr. Kibuuka encouraged the MUWRP staff in attendance to emulate the good leadership qualities and skills that Dr. Vasireddy showcased during his tenure in Uganda.
The occasion was attended by MUWRP’s Deputy Executive Director, Dr. Betty Mwesigwa, and heads of department. They appreciated Dr. Vasireddy for recognizing MUWRP as experts in HIV vaccine research, and for his tireless efforts in providing technical and strategic guidance for MUWRP’s operations. They also appreciated him for his advocacy on behalf of MUWRP, championing resource mobilization for the organization’s diverse projects. Described as an approachable, encouraging, dynamic, supportive, and candid individual, Dr. Vasireddy’s legacy at MUWRP will be remembered for years to come.
On his part, Dr. Vasireddy expressed appreciation to MUWRP for inspiring him to enhance its profile and recognition. He felt proud of his contributions to MUWRP and encouraged the MUWRP team to sustain all relationships he had established.
Dr. Vasireddy is leaving Uganda to undertake other assignments under the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.
